Fine glow granules for stirring into casting resin, varnish or adhesive, or for scattering. They absorb light and release it in the dark as a blue glow – without electricity and as often as you like. In daylight they are almost colour-neutral and whitish – popular for river tables and resin art where the glow should only stand out in the dark.

Properties

  • Material: strontium aluminate doped with europium and dysprosium
  • Grain size: fine, approx. 0.5–1 mm
  • Afterglow duration: up to 12 hours after a full charge in complete darkness; at its strongest in the first few minutes
  • Colour: whitish in daylight, blue in the dark
  • Temperature: heat-resistant up to 1,200 °C
  • Classification: not classified as hazardous under CLP – see safety data sheet

How to use the glow granules

The granules are worked into a carrier or scattered loosely: epoxy and casting resin, resin, clear varnish, adhesive, grout, wax or silicone. Typical uses are river tables, resin jewellery and coasters, mould making and decoration.

  • Casting resin: in thin, runny resin the grains sink. Let the resin thicken slightly, then stir them in and distribute them quickly – or add the granules only to the top layer.
  • Scattering: scatter onto still-wet varnish, adhesive or resin and press down lightly; then protect smooth surfaces with clear varnish.
  • Concrete, paving, joints: press into the still-wet surface and sand flush after curing – or embed in a transparent, walk-on layer.
  • Outdoors: use with solvent-based, weather-resistant carriers such as epoxy or exterior clear varnish.
  • The clearer and lighter the carrier, the stronger the glow. Prime dark surfaces in a light colour first.

What's included

100 g glow granules Blue, grain size approx. 0.5–1 mm, in a poly bag.

Good to know

Afterglow is an aid for orientation and effect, not lighting: it becomes visible in real darkness, but hardly under a street lamp. The 1 mm granules are not waterproof: in water they dissolve to a greater or lesser extent over time, and the glow effect is lost. For use in or near water, embed the grains in resin or a water-resistant clear varnish – or use the 4 mm granules, in which the pigment is bound in synthetic resin. The granules are a material, not a toy.

Frequently asked questions

How long do the Blue granules glow?
Up to 12 hours after a full charge in complete darkness. They are at their strongest in the first few minutes; after 1–2 hours the glow turns into a faint glimmer.
What charges the granules and how long does it take?
With any light source. Guide values for a full charge: UV light from 365 nm 2–4 minutes, sunlight 6–9 minutes, fluorescent lamp 20–24 minutes, incandescent bulb approx. 25 minutes. After that it glows at its strongest and gradually fades.
How do I work the granules into casting resin?
In thin, runny resin the grains sink. Let the resin thicken slightly, then stir in the granules and distribute them quickly. Alternatively, add them only to the top layer. The clearer the resin, the stronger the glow.
How hot can the granules get?
The untinted granules are heat-resistant up to 1,200 °C. Tinted granules such as orange or pink should not be heated above approx. 150 °C, because the colour decomposes.
Is the material radioactive?
No – like all modern glow pigments. The glow comes solely from stored light.
Can the 1 mm granules go in water, for example in an aquarium or a vase?
No. The 1 mm granules are not waterproof: in water they dissolve to a greater or lesser extent over time, and the glow effect is lost. The 4 mm granules, in which the pigment is bound in synthetic resin, are suitable for water – or you can embed the fine grains in resin or a water-resistant clear varnish.
